MOSS POINT, Miss. (WLOX) - According to Moss Point Mayor Billy Knight, a former mayoral candidate and longtime Moss Point resident was killed in a shootout Sunday night.

Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd confirms 61-year-old Richard McBride died from a single gunshot wound.

Mayor Knight says McBride and another man were involved in a shootout around 8 p.m. on Donovan Street.

McBride and the other shooter were both injured and hospitalized. McBride was taken to Singing River Hospital, where he died around 8:15 p.m., according to the coroner.

The other shooter’s name is being withheld at this time as police determine what led to the shooting and who is at fault.

McBride ran for Moss Point mayor in 2021 and 2025.
