President Donald Trump declared that a meeting with top Democratic leaders would not be “productive” as Congress hurries to avoid a possible government shutdown at the end of the month.
In a letter sent over the weekend, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) demanded to meet with Trump to negotiate a deal to prevent a government shutdown . Trump responded on Tuesday, saying that the Democratic leaders’ demands were “unserious” and “ridiculous” and that meeting with them could not “possibly be productive.”
