A Wisconsin lawmaker is leading the charge to create the state’s first national park.

Congressman Tom Tiffany (WI-07) reintroduced the Apostle Islands National Park and Preserve Act this month, which aims to designate Apostle Islands National Lakeshore as a National Park.

Apostle Islands , a group of 21 islands in Lake Superior at the northern tip of Wisconsin, features sea caves, sandy beaches and the most lighthouses in the National Park system.

Along with Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks, it is one of three national lakeshores in the U.S. Indiana Dunes was once considered a national lakeshore, but it became Indiana’s first national park following similar legislation in 2019.
