In sports and in life, some days simply aren’t your best. Unfortunately for Grant Fisher, racing the World Championships 5K in Tokyo Sunday was one of those frustrating days.
The Paris Olympics bronze medalist was seeking his first championships podium. No American had previously won the championships event since 2007. Fisher’s strategy was to control the race from the front, run a fast pace and eliminate much of the field from potentially out-kicking him late.
While Fisher would lead much of the beginning and middle of the 12.5-lap race, he faded in the final third, with about four laps to go. Known to many for his late-race heroics, others like winner and compatriot Cole Hocker got to put those on display at the Japan National Stadium, host of the 2020 Games.
