Podcaster and comedian Joe Rogan may have endorsed President Donald Trump in 2024, but less than a year later he's railing against the Trump administration's efforts to get late night host Jimmy Kimmel off the air.
During his most recent episode — in which he interviewed fellow comedian Andrew Santino — Rogan didn't hold back in his criticism of Trump for its treatment of Kimmel. He also heaped criticism on MAGA Republicans for their celebration of the ABC host's show being temporarily suspended in response to Kimmel's comments about "the MAGA gang" trying to "score political points" off of the shooting of far-right activist Charlie Kirk.
Rogan began his criticism by remarking on how the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) was only meant to make sure broadcasters were "on the up and up," and not to police free speech.
"I definitely don't think that the government should be involved — ever — in dictating what a comedian can or cannot say in a monologue," Rogan said. "That's f------ crazy."
"The problem is, the companies if they're being pressured by the government, so if that's real, and if people on the right are like, 'yeah, go get em!' Oh my God, you're crazy. You're crazy for supporting this," he added. "Because this will be used on you."
Rogan went on to call Trump supporters who praised Disney and ABC's decision to suspend Kimmel "f------ dumb-----," while Santino said it was "the most toxic s--- I've ever seen." Rogan went on to scoff at MAGA supporters who believed that the FCC wouldn't be used to silence right-wing speech under a future Democratic administration.
Kimmel is returning to his show Tuesday night after less than a week off the air. Disney announced the late night host would be coming back after "thoughtful conversations. However, Kimmel's return comes on the heels of a massive consumer boycott in which so many Disney Plus customers cancelled their subscriptions that it temporarily crashed their cancellation page. Television critic Peter White said Tuesday he would be "very surprised" if Kimmel apologized in his opening monologue.
