“A bunch of us were involved in other local community centers — and it felt like we had a lot more energy to give than there was capacity to receive,” said Dana Newman, who is a founding board member and the communications director of the Resilience Resource Center in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania.

Recently, the Gender Justice Fund awarded the center $20,000 through its Trans Resilience Fund, supporting programs and services specifically for trans community members.

Other organizations sometimes identify a funding source and then shape their programming to fit the requirements and priorities associated with that funding, explained Newman. But organizers at the Resilience Resource Center continued to hear the needs of the LGBTQ+ community that weren’t being attended to through that mode
