DUMFRIES, Va. — The Town of Dumfries accomplished a major step to help fulfill what’s been described as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity.”

Officials announced Monday how they secured a deal with the Campbell property to purchase 161 acres of land next to Quantico Creek for $3.9 million. The plan allows the town to jumpstart the process to transform what was an old salvage yard, near Possum Point Road and Colonial Port Road, into a waterfront district.

With goals of additional jobs, economic investments, and cultural preservation, Mayor Derrick Wood said the project is part of Destination Dumfries Vision 2044 . The plan would revitalize a town that was first established in the 18th century because of the port.
