AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - You never realize what you have until it’s gone. And when the storm hit, everything changed.

At 4 a.m., Georgia Power crews knew it wasn’t just another thunderstorm.

“We knew it was bad, hearing it at 4 a.m., because I’ve never heard that. Listened through a million thunderstorms, just things like the lightning popping. We were hearing trees knocking steadily, blue flashes of light, breakers going out,” said Shane Wyatt, Georgia Power.

Darkness took over. For many, the signs came quickly, lights flickering and then silence.

“I could remember the lights flickering and then all the power going out,” Damone Garner, MCG Health, emergency preparedness director.

Roads like Washington and Belair turned pitch black.
