KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Police Department has announced the retirement of one of its original Mounted Patrol horses , Waggoner.
Waggoner was diagnosed with polysaccharide storage myopathy, a common genetic muscular disorder that can cause discomfort and limit the horse's ability to perform "strenuous activity," according to KPD.
"The condition is hereditary and was previously undiagnosed in Waggoner, until he began showing symptoms in the last couple of months," KPD said.
Waggoner was bought with federal grant funding through Texas-based Mounted Patrol International LLC in late 2024, only hitting the streets for the first time in May, according to KPD.
