London may soon have 60 small homes, or micro shelters, as Mayor Josh Morgan pushes for immediate help for the city’s homeless.
Morgan wants the units to be in place by year end and is using authority granted by the Ontario government, referred to as “strong mayor powers” , to speed up the development.
“We have to take action. This has been tried in other cities and it works,” Morgan said on Tuesday.
“We all talk, we share ideas on what is working and what is not. We are all facing the same challenges and we need supportive housing, not just shelter space.”
There is no budget yet for the proposal and Morgan is not certain where the homes will be located, saying he will leave it to city hall staff for the best options. But stressed they will not be located near residential areas.
