BUFFALO, N.Y. — Local medical experts are speaking out after the Trump administration suggested a link between autism and acetaminophen, a drug commonly used by pregnant women.

Dr. Stephen Turkovich, president of Oishei Children’s Hospital, said a review of 46 studies found some potential associations between acetaminophen use during pregnancy and autism, but stressed there is no definitive cause-and-effect. “This is a nuanced conversation, and much more research is needed,” he said. “It’s not a hard definitive, yes, absolutely this. There’s a cause here, but I think that there’s some reasonable caution, and we should always have people talking to their OBGYNs anytime they’re taking any medication.”
