East Texas is home to four of the more toxic mushrooms: Skull Cap, Death Cap, Funeral Bell and Destroying Angel, and Dr. Gary Spence says they can generally be seen growing around oak trees and in open pastures after a rain. “If the gills are white, or if the top of the cap is white, you want to avoid that,” Spence said. “Those are probably going to be a poisonous mushroom.”
