[DES MOINES, Iowa] — A baby boy is now safe thanks to Iowa's Safe Haven Law.
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services took custody of the infant, who was born on September 8. He is the 78th infant protected by the law since it was enacted over 20 years ago, with four cases occurring this year alone.
The baby will remain with a foster family until a permanent home is found.
The Safe Haven Law offers parents in crisis the option to safely relinquish infants up to 90 days old at designated locations like hospitals and police stations.
