For some people, the perfect beach day doesn’t involve sand or surf – it involves seed.

And pigeons. Lots of pigeons.

That’s what brings Jaden Nunes and his mom Amanda to Esquimalt Lagoon.

“He just loves birds,” Amanda says. “He’s neurodivergent, so he takes extreme interest in things and it happens to be doves and pigeons. Having this opportunity is regulating for him. It gets him outside.”

The lagoon is a migratory bird sanctuary. Ducks, geese, and shorebirds stop in, fuel up, and fly on. But pigeons? They’re not tourists. They’re residents because they know where the buffet is.
