Alek Manoah’s ascent to great heights with the Blue Jays has ended in a freefall.

The right-handed pitcher, who finished third in American League Cy Young voting in 2022 at age 23, was designated for assignment on Tuesday before the Blue Jays took on the Red Sox in the first of three games at Rogers Centre.

Manoah had not pitched in the major leagues since May 29, 2024, and had undergone elbow reconstruction surgery the following month.

Toronto general manager Ross Atkins broke the news to Manoah earlier Tuesday.
