Observers bashed President Donald Trump late Tuesday night after the president threatened a prominent television network over a popular program it decided to reinstate.
"Jimmy Kimmel Live!" returned to some local ABC airwaves on Tuesday night following an "indefinite" suspension handed down last week by Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group. The two Trump-aligned companies suspended Kimmel's show after the comedian made comments about the killer of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk that were deemed "insensitive."
Disney, which owns ABC, announced on Monday that Kimmel's eponymous show would return in most markets. Nexstar said in a statement that it won't air the program and will instead work toward "fostering an environment of respectful, constructive dialogue in the markets we serve." Sinclair is also planning to preempt the airing of Kimmel's show, according to media reports.
Trump responded to the news in a social media post on Tuesday night.
"I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back," Trump's wrote in a post on Truth Social late Tuesday night. "The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled!"
"I think we’re going to test ABC out on this," the post continues. "Let’s see how we do. Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars."
Political analysts and observers responded to Trump's threat on social media.
"Fats needs to just take the L here," commentator Keith Olbermann posted on X.
"The President of the United States threatening a television network," immigration lawyer Aaron Reichlin-Melnick posted on X. "Just background noise in our broken politics."
"What would be the basis of the lawsuit, Trump doesn’t like Kimmel’s jokes?" Dean Baker, senior economist for the Center for Economic &Policy Research, posted on X.
"A lot of people were like 'Jimmy Kimmel being back on PROVES there was no government coercion against free speech' and then Trump just posted he’s going to sue ABC for putting Jimmy Kimmel back on," podcaster Armand Domalewski posted on X.
"Trump is crying because Jimmy Kimmel is back on the air," media strategist Vince Monroy posted on Bluesky.
