COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 1,500 white pinwheels cover the lawn outside Columbus City Hall, each representing an infant in Franklin County who did not survive to their first birthday.

Kidan Gray was among the mothers at the event on Tuesday, honoring her late daughter, Kaija Monye Kerenza Haskins.

“She was always smiling. She was always happy. She still makes me smile by just thinking of her smile,” Gray said.

Kaija was one of 1,539 babies in Franklin County who, over the last 10 years, did not survive their first year of life.

“Kaija was born July 28, 2024, she was here three months and 26 days, and she passed away Nov. 23, 2024," Gray said. "Kaija was very bright, her smile, her energy. I’m blessed to say that I’m her mother."
