TACOMA, Wash. — The Tacoma Police Department is investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy found unresponsive last week.

The boy, identified as Preston Hemingway-Lux, was discovered Friday afternoon near South Lawrence Street and South 40th Street. Emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene. Police described the case as a suspicious death, but said there were no obvious signs of external trauma.

Residents of the Vintage at Tacoma apartments told KING 5 the boy was found at their complex. They said the police response was overwhelming.

“From 43rd to our driveway, there were nine police cars,” said Judy Anderson, a resident. “There were police cars in there, ambulance, fire truck — I didn’t know what to think.”
