The woman who manages a federal uranium mill tailings disposal site north of Rifle and was involved in a major project to address the problem of water accumulation there has received national recognition from the agency that employs her.

Mary Young was named the federal Office of Legacy Management 2025 employee of the year and a Philip C. Leahy Award winner. The Leahy award recognizes agency employees who are outstanding team players.

The Office of Legacy Management is part of the Department of Energy. It manages more than 100 sites associated with past radiological and nuclear material production and testing, and energy research, according to its website.
