Garlic is one of the easiest herbs to grow in your garden but unlike other herbs, planting is done in the fall rather than the spring. Garlic bulbs can be planted in Georgia from late September through November. The reason garlic is planted in the fall is to permit full leaf development. Leaves develop in the cool days of fall.

There are three specific types of garlic: softneck, hardneck, and elephant. Softneck garlic stores very well, and it is found in most grocery stores. Hardneck garlic usually grows best in colder areas. Elephant garlic is large and part of the leek family. In Georgia, you will want to plant softneck garlic bulbs. There are several different softneck bulbs to choose from but Inchelium Red and Red Italian work very well. Garlic is not a seed but a clove to be planted.
