While my maternal grandfather, Fred Marshall, was a transformative figure in my life, my paternal grandfather, Clarence Deane, remains somewhat of a mystery.
As an infant, I lived on my Marshall grandparents’ farm in Vermont while my father was away in the Pacific in World War II. Through my childhood, my family made holiday and vacation trips to a cherished second farm. In my high school years, my Marshall grandparents lived in an apartment over my parents’ house in Athol. They were part of our lives.
