After eight years and $63-million, The First State completes a major upgrade if its emergency radio system for first responders.
The State's legacy 800 MHz system was decommissioned over the course of the project, which concluded Monday according to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security. The overhaul included re-programming of about 18,000 radios across the state. Laptops have also been introduced for use in the field.
The previous system was facing growing challenges due to obsolete equipment and limited availability of parts. DSHS said the result of the upgrade is a successful move from an antiquated system to a state-of-the-art platform.
