Anyone who has a contract with power companies such as OVO, E.on, Octopus and British Gas has been warned by Martin Lewis. The personal finance expert spoke out about his ‘disappointment’ today at the ‘poll tax’ which sees people paying £300 or more for power - before they use any.

In an announcement today from Ofgem energy suppliers will be made to offer at least one tariff with lower standing charges as soon as January under plans confirmed by the industry regulator, but it ditched proposals to remove the fixed costs entirely for some deals.
