Supporting the next generation of journalists is at the heart of Metroland Media’s new internship program.

This academic internship program offers up to 10 post-secondary students the opportunity to experience community newsrooms across Metroland’s Ontario footprint as part of their course requirements. These unpaid internships will launch in the spring of 2026.

Six daily newspapers — Hamilton Spectator, Niagara Falls Review, Peterborough Examiner, St. Catharines Standard, Waterloo Region Record and Welland Tribune — plus more than 60 community brands on 19 free news sites are involved in the program.

Lee Ann Waterman, vice-president of editorial at Metroland, said this boots-on-the-ground opportunity has been created to provide students with a valuable experience.
