The Kremlin has reacted sharply to comments made by Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly, where he suggested that Ukraine could reclaim territory occupied by Russia. A spokesperson for the Kremlin stated that Trump is "deeply mistaken" and emphasised that Russia's military actions are not an "aimless war".
Trump proposed that a return to the original borders prior to the conflict is a viable option. He stated, "I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form." He further noted that achieving this would require "time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO" to assist Kyiv in regaining lost territory.
In his remarks, Trump claimed that Russia is currently facing significant economic difficulties. He expressed that Moscow has been "fighting aimlessly" for over three years, asserting that if Russia were a "real military power", it would have defeated Ukraine in less than a week.
During his address, Trump also suggested that NATO should take a more aggressive stance, stating that allied forces should shoot down Russian planes if they enter NATO airspace. He further praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, calling him "a great man" and commending the resilience of Ukraine in the ongoing conflict. Trump remarked, "We have great respect for the fight Ukraine is putting up, it's pretty amazing actually."
The Kremlin's response highlights the ongoing tensions between Russia and the West, particularly in light of the conflict in Ukraine. Additionally, a statement from Russian officials indicated that the process of restoring relations with the United States is progressing much slower than anticipated.
