NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) - In last week's "Weather Wednesday," we spoke about what causes wind and this week we will chat about a scale that's used when talking about wind called the Beaufort Scale.

According to the National Weather Service, the Beaufort Scale is "one of the first scales to estimate wind speeds and the effects was created by Britain's Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort."

The scale was developed back in 1805 with the goal to help sailors evaluate winds by using visual observations and it's still used today as a means to estimate wind strengths.

The scale starts with 0 and goes all the way up to 12, and below lays out what can be seen at each level:
