The Met Office has issued an update on Hurricane Gabrielle, which is set to influence UK weather over the coming week . Having intensified into a major hurricane near Bermuda, Gabrielle was still classified as a category four hurricane with winds surpassing 135mph on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Centre, the hurricane may have reached its peak intensity. Despite this, Gabrielle is expected to maintain hurricane status as it nears the Azores on Thursday, September 25.

The system could generate significant waves reaching five to six metres as it moves towards mainland Europe. Nevertheless, the Met Office has indicated that the UK is unlikely to experience any severe effects, as reported by the MEN.
