The Meadowlands Racetrack may part ways with its signature event — the Hambletonian — as the track's owner waits to see how casino proposals in New York City play out and he eyes a potential gambling hall in North Jersey .

The organizers of the Hambletonian said this month that they were opening the bidding process for the 2027 race to take place somewhere other than the Meadowlands, where the race has been based since 1981.

The news comes as officials in New York City earlier this week voted down the third and last proposal for a Manhattan casino, meaning that any casino built in the city would be in Brooklyn, Queens or The Bronx, and therefore farther from New Jersey.
