Walters canceled an OSBE meeting. It came at a cost to some teachers

When state schools Superintendent Ryan Walters decided to cancel the August meeting of the Oklahoma State Board of Education, it meant hundreds of classroom teachers had to wait another month to receive the full pay rate for their jobs.

The teachers are waiting on the board to approve their “emergency certification” requests, which typically happens as part of a routine vote by the board. Emergency certification is necessary for adults without education degrees to serve as classroom teachers.
