Popular holiday destination Tenerife has recorded a ‘seismic swarm’ of 22 small earthquakes this week.

The activity has been described as ‘peculiar’ by the Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) due to the location of the seismic activity, which was concentrated between Izana and the highlands of La Orotava, near the centre of the island, Canarian Weekly reports.

Ithaiza Domínguez, director of the IGN in the Canary Islands , said overall the activity is normal for volcanic environments, although the area has only begun to show new seismic activity this year.

The earthquakes measured between 0.6 and 2 on the Richter scale and occurred between 10am local time on Monday (September 22) and 8.10am on Tuesday. They had an average depth of around seven kilometres.
