HMRC could be set to access UK households' bank accounts AND ISAs if you haven't paid taxes. HMRC will now have the power to take money directly from the bank accounts of those who haven't paid a tax bill.
HMRC will compel banks to pay the taxman directly from a debtor’s account, if they have repeatedly refused to pay a tax bill worth £1,000 or more. In a "draconian" move from the Labour Party government, the new HMRC powers includes funds held in cash ISAs, too.
The policy, known as Direct Recovery of Debts or DRD, was launched in 2015, but was paused during the Covid crisis. Now HMRC is set to restart the programme and could claw back cash from UK households up and down the country.
