SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — At SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, one of the nation’s top environmental science colleges, the future looks both promising and uncertain.

"Fortunately, at ESF, there's a strong demand for these environmental science programs. Our enrollment is strong. That puts us in a position to grow our way out of our budgetary problems, rather than cut our way. We're not talking about cutting programs," said Joanie Mahoney, President at SUNY ESF.

For the fall 2025 semester, the college welcomed its fourth-largest class since 2002.

While Mahoney points to growth as a long-term solution, right now, ESF is turning to a voluntary separation program aimed at encouraging retirements.
