LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Longtime Jefferson County Sheriff John Aubrey has died. He was 86 years old.

The news was confirmed by Lieutenant Colonel Carl Yates, who said Aubrey passed away peacefully, surrounded by family.

Earlier this year, Aubrey announced he would not seek an eighth term. He was first elected in 1998 and served as sheriff for 27 years.

In January, he was recognized as the National Sheriffs' Association's 2025 Sheriff of the Year.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
