Leh: Renowned Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk announced the immediate end of his hunger strike in Leh on Thursday, following the eruption of violent protests in the region over demands for statehood and the extension of the Sixth Schedule. Saddened by the violence, Wangchuk appealed to the youth of Ladakh to shun violence and opt for peaceful dialogue with the government.
The protests, which escalated rapidly, saw demonstrators pelting stones and clashing with the police and torching the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Leh. Authorities responded with teargas shells and baton charges to bring the situation under control. The unrest was triggered in support of advancing proposed talks with the Centre regarding the Sixth Schedule and the statehood of Ladakh.
