FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Viktor Hovland is an interesting guy to have a conversation with. Just ask Ludvig Aberg.
The duo teamed up in foursomes during the Ryder Cup in Rome two years ago, winning both of their matches including a 9-and-7 drubbing on Saturday against Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka, the largest margin of victory for an 18-hole match in the history of the Ryder Cup. Since that week, their friendship has only blossomed.
From the Nordic region of Europe, with Hovland from Norway and Aberg from Sweden, the duo have also formed a bond that could be used in numerous Ryder Cups going into the future. It would be shocking to not see them playing together come Friday and Saturday foursomes.
"We come from a very similar background," Aberg said of Hovland. "Obviously he grew up in Norway, and Sweden are very close in terms of the cultural environment. And yeah, we get along. He's a funny guy to have funny conversations with. They can go in any direction that you don't really expect."
That answer prompted a follow-up question from a reporter, who asked what the wackiest thing the jovial Hovland had brought up at Bethpage Black this week.
"He's always into sort of the UFO deals and all those things, so it's quite interesting. I'm not quite down that road just yet. If I hang out with him long enough, I might be.
"Again, you never really know where it's going to go, which is quite interesting."
Viktor Hovland: believer in aliens? The seven-time PGA Tour winner wasn't interviewed Wednesday to be asked about his UFO thoughts, but maybe it's another case of Hovland being Hovland.
Strange conversations aside, Aberg would welcome pairing with Hovland this week in New York.
"We had a good time in Rome, and we've played multiple practice rounds since, and our caddies get along great, too," Aberg said. "He's a good friend to have on Tour and in the team room here."
