An anti-Israel activist who embarked on a firebombing rampage has been sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. federal prison.

Casey Robert Goonan, 35, was convicted in January 2025 after pleading guilty to one count of maliciously damaging or destroying property used in or affecting interstate commerce by means of fire or an explosive.

The U.S. Department of Justice said the Oakland man is being sent away for a firebombing in Berkeley and an attempted firebombing of a federal building in Oakland.

A self-described “scholar-activist,” Goonan, who is white, has a PhD and lives in the basement of his mother’s home. He claims to be an expert in the “African American experience.”
