PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Rhode Island sheriff appeared in court Wednesday morning following his arrest for an incident at Johnson & Wales University (JWU).

Jeffrey P. Cahoon was arraigned on a disorderly conduct charge.

According to the state's transparency portal, Cahoon is a deputy sheriff with the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety.

Police said the incident remains under investigation and declined to release additional details.

In a statement, JWU said Campus Safety & Security was notified of an incident at the Starbucks on its Downcity campus and that Providence police were contacted. The student involved provided information and was "offered supportive resources," the university noted.
