When asylum seekers were sent to stay at a hotel in Newton Heath last summer, they had nothing with them - in fact, they were barefoot.

In a hurry, local councillors collected shoes to donate to the residents.

But this act of kindness was followed by ugly scenes when protestors - including children and young men wearing balaclavas - gathered outside to demonstrate.

The mob gathered outside the Holiday Inn hotel, on Oldham Road, and hurled glass bottles at police vans, jumped in front of passing cars and charged at police officers.
