DALLAS — A shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of two detainees and left another critically injured. The shooter, who opened fire from a nearby roof, later took his own life, according to authorities.

The FBI reported that ammunition found at the scene contained anti-ICE messages. Kash Patel, the head of the agency, shared a photo on social media showing a bullet marked with the words "ANTI-ICE."

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), stated that no ICE agents were harmed during the incident. "We believe he was shooting at law enforcement and detainees from an apartment building," McLaughlin said. "Detainees were among the victims of the shooting."

The FBI is treating the incident as "an act of targeted violence." This shooting follows a recent trend of public attacks in the U.S., including a similar incident two weeks prior.

Dallas police responded to reports of gunfire around 6:40 a.m. and discovered that the shooter had targeted the ICE building from an adjacent structure. Edwin Cardona, an immigrant from Venezuela, was entering the facility with his son when he heard the gunshots. He described the scene, saying an agent quickly gathered those inside and moved them to a secure area. "I was afraid for my family because my family was outside. I felt terrible because I thought something could happen to them. Thank God no," Cardona said.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where traffic cameras showed a normally busy freeway empty as vehicles came to a halt. Dozens of emergency vehicles were present near the facility, which is located along Interstate 35 East, close to Dallas Love Field Airport.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that there were multiple injuries and fatalities at the ICE office but noted that the motive for the shooting remains unclear. She acknowledged an increase in attacks targeting ICE agents, referencing a July 4 incident at a Texas immigration detention center that injured a police officer.

The shooting has sparked discussions among politicians, with some calling for an end to violence against law enforcement. U.S. Senator Ted Cruz urged an end to politically motivated violence, while Democratic U.S. Representative Marc Veasey expressed concern over the narrative surrounding the victims.

As investigations continue, the community remains on edge following this tragic event.
