UPDATE: Police cleared the scene about 9:30 p.m. and said no threat was found.

EARLIER: Birmingham police are investigating a suspicious package at the department downtown headquarters.

Few details have been released, but the investigation began about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Officers cordoned off the streets surrounding the department and those still in the building were evacuated. The department’s tactical team also responded.

“We are following proper protocol as we do in these types of situations,” said Sgt. LaQuitta Wade.

Police were still on the scene as of 8:15 p.m.
