Two Birmingham men, one who is on Alabama’s Death Row, have been indicted for allegedly conspiring to kill a state prison officer.

A Jefferson County grand jury indicted Demarcus TyQuan Chandler, 27, and Justin Jamond Hendrix, 21, with conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.

The indictments were issued Sept. 12 and made public Wednesday. Both were initially charged with the alleged crimes last year.

Authorities contend Hendrix, at the direction of Chandler who was in state prison at the time, carried out the shooting.

The gunfire happened at 2 a.m. on Aug. 20, 2024, at the eastern Birmingham home of a state prison lieutenant. Charging documents state shots were fired into a residence and an SUV.
