Mobile Mayor-elect Spiro Cheriogotis will take office in 40 days, replacing retiring three-term Mayor Sandy Stimpson to lead Alabama’s second largest city.
Cheriogotis, 42, has not been in city government before, but he emerged victorious on Tuesday by defeating Alabama State Rep. Barbara Drummond in a close runoff.
A former Mobile County District judge and prosecutor, his only public experience has been in the judicial branch. However, Cheriogotis will soon inherit a General Fund budget of over $380 million, approximately $80 million in annual capital improvements and over 2,000 city employees.
