Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, urging world leaders to unite against Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine. He warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin aims to extend the conflict beyond Ukraine, leading to what he described as "the most destructive arms race in human history."
Zelenskyy stated, "The facts are simple, stopping this war … is cheaper than building underground kindergartens or massive bunkers for critical infrastructure later." He highlighted recent incidents of Russian drones and fighter jets violating airspace in NATO countries like Poland and Estonia, suggesting that Putin is testing new limits in the conflict.
He emphasized that Ukraine is prepared to export its weapons to allies, saying, "You don’t need to start this race from scratch. We’re ready to share what has already proven itself." Zelenskyy noted that these weapons have been tested in real combat situations, asserting, "We are ready to make our modern weapons become your modern security."
Zelenskyy also criticized the effectiveness of international law and institutions, stating, "Weapons decide who survives. There are no security guarantees except friends and weapons." He expressed concern for neighboring countries like Moldova, which he said is facing Russian interference, and warned that Europe cannot afford to lose Moldova as it has with Georgia and Belarus.
His remarks came shortly after a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, who expressed support for Ukraine's efforts and criticized Russia's actions. Trump stated he believes Ukraine can reclaim all territory lost to Russia, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy towards the conflict.
