The percentage of Americans who drink alcohol is at a record low as more U.S. adults than ever believe even moderate drinking is unhealthy, a poll shows.

About half of U.S. adults, 54%, say they drink alcohol, according to a 2025 Gallup poll , the lowest percentage in almost 90 years.

For the first time, a majority of Americans, 53%, now consider drinking in moderation — one or two drinks a day — to be bad for health, Gallup found.

It's a "sharp reversal" from previous messaging that this could offer some protective benefits, Gallup noted.

"It's kind of gone back and forth as to whether it's healthy for you or not to have that light to moderate drinking. Some of the studies have said yes, some have said no," NBC News medical correspondent Dr. John Torres said on TODAY .
