STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) – Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard is advising the public of a recent uptick in phone scams that are targeting everyone in the area––and not just the elderly.
In a release from the Steuben County Sheriff's Office, Sheriff Allard stated that the scams often involve a caller who impersonates law enforcement officers or members of other government agencies and uses one of the following tactics to trick their victim: • Spoofing phone numbers to make their call look legitimate • Claiming the victim missed a court date or has a warrant that requires immediate payment • Demanding payment for fines in the form of gift cards or wire transfers • Making threats regarding sex offender registration compliance • Warning that personal information will be released i
