WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - 89 eastern Iowa veterans flew to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday for Eastern Iowa Honor Flight’s 56th mission.

The missions are all-expenses-paid trips for veterans to see the nation’s war memorials that were built to honor them.

“This is our way of giving them the opportunity to see their memorials and allow the community, and us, to tell them, ‘thank you for their service,’” said Lynette Voss, the president of the honor flight group.

Brent Fessler, a Vietnam era Navy veteran from Dubuque, said he enjoyed the chance to visit the nation’s capital and the memorials.

“These people put together a really neat tour for those of us that have served. And this is just an opportunity for us to come out and see all these neat things,” he said.
