WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Charles F. McAfee Pool at 1240 East 14th Street North has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the city says.

Built in 1969, the pool was the first in Kansas designed for African American children to practice lap swimming. In 2021, it was renamed after architect Charles McAfee, one of the first African American graduates of the University of Nebraska’s architecture program and a founding member of the National Organization of Minority Architects.

The City received a 2023 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund to develop a preservation plan, list the building on the National Register, and make improvements. The pool was nominated for its modern design and significance in Wichita’s African American community.
