KINGSTON, N.Y. — A Highland resident and his mother were convicted Monday in connection with a case of elder abuse of a relative , the Ulster County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

On Monday, Sept. 22, an Ulster County jury convicted Stephenie Melton, 53, of Poughkeepsie, of one count felony grand larceny and her son Travis Pettit, 29, of Highland, on two counts of the felonies of forgery and identity theft.

Melton was acquitted of grand larceny as a hate crime, a charge that reflected the age of the victim.

Melton’s charge carries a sentence of up to 5 to 15 years in state prison. Pettit’s charges carry a maximum sentence of 2 1/3 to seven years in state prison. Sentencing by Ulster County Judge Bryan Rounds is set for Dec. 4.

Both defendants were released prior to senten
