During President Donald Trump's first administration in 2020, a rule change saw the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) collecting DNA through cheek swabs from nearly every person it detains. The agency sends these samples to the FBI for analysis and permanent storage and to be added to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), a database used across the United States by local, state, and federal law enforcement to identify criminal suspects using their DNA. However, according to a new report, U.S. Customers and Border Protection (CBP), under the umbrella of the DHS, has allegedly bent the law (and, apparently, the U.S. Constitution) by forcing American citizens to submit to DNA collection at ports of entry, including airports.
