LITTLE FALLS, N.J. —

In New Jersey, baseball fans, families and former players joined forces on the diamond.

The effort to break the Guinness World Record for the largest game of catch happened Sunday in New Jersey at Yogi Berra Stadium at Montclair State University.

More than 1,100 pairs of people took on the challenge to break the "play catch" record. Participants stood 10 feet apart and played catch for five minutes.

The previous record was set in 2017 in Illinois, with 972 pairs of people.

The record-setting play catch event was held as a tribute to Yogi Berra, a Hall of Famer and New York Yankee great who was a longtime resident of Montclair.

He received an honorary degree from the school in 1996.
